The Teachings of Shirelle

If you love dogs, this book will deliver a story that will have you shake your head in recognition, laugh at the relationship between the two, and cry as they go through their lows. Shirelle is a dog that has problems from the beginning. She is slated to be destroyed when the author finds her and from there begins a relationship that will impact not only Mr. Green's life, but also many others around him.

I was blown away at how fun and wonderful this story was. Shirelle reminded me of a dog I once has so it was even more personal to me than I would have once thought. I cried and laughed at the stories and the lessons she taught him. I received the ebook first and then was blessed by the publisher with the physical copy. If you are incline to purchase this book, buy the physical copy. The colored photos inside will make the book come alive even more and really make you connect with the characters.

Bring a tissue and wag a tail, this is a book that will definitely make you think.

Legend of Rhyme Book 3

Our adventure continues on as we are once again enchanted by the adventures of Corania. in the Legend of Rhyme. Evil has come to the realm in the form of Asgall the sorcerer and he has turned the world of the twins upside down by sending them into a magical less future. There they must discover Teagan who doesn't realize how special she is and try hard to get back to the land and time they love before anything more can happen.

These books keep getting better and better. A fairy tale that is fun and clean and full of twists reminding me why we read these stories in the first place. I still love Wink and Fidget! Asher and Ariana are filling out to become rounded characters and the battle of good and evil is defined well. I am looking forward to read the continued adventures as well as my kids who ask all the time when the next one is out. A great addition and I like the jump into our whole time.

Book 2 of The Blood Guard

Ronan and Greta are back in the next chapter of The Blood Guard... The Glass Gauntlet. Filled again with action and thrills, the Glass Gauntlet begins with the first stretch in the training of Ronan to be a true Blood Guard. Faced with the fact his father is evil and that he might be out to destroy all the pure spirits, Ronan must decide what he's going to do. Also in the mix, he must pass The Glass Gaunlet, a series of tests in a weird school that will ready him for his next missions as part of the protection detail.

As with the first, these books are great for bored readers(readers who think all books are boring). Much like Percy Jackson, the characters are ones that you identify with as well as fall in love with. You care about Ronan and Greta as they try to get along and make it through a life they never thought possible. Descriptions are well worded and give you just enough to set your imagination wild. We are ready for the third.

Cure for the BORED Reader

A daring rescue, a secret organization, and a wickedly cool cast of great characters... the Blood Guard is a great start to an epic trilogy...

The Blood Guard protect the world without the world knowing they do. Ronan Trueloves's mother is such a guard and by inheritance, so will he once he is old enough. Of course, Ronan doesn't know any of this until his mother is captured by the enemy and he and his hated arch nemesis, Greta are stuck together. With all the wits he can muster and all the classes he was forced to take, Ronan must rescue his mom, save the world, and not kill Greta all before figuring out just what the Blood Guard really want from him.

I enjoyed this book as did my kids. We rooted for the good guys, booed the bad ones, and sat on the edge of ours seats through the rest. A page turner with tons of action, I highly recommend this book to all ages, especially children that struggle with reading because it's boring. This book is far from it.

Post Nuclear Steampunk FUN

Sometimes you can't win for losing... when the death of your parents, the robbery of your aunt, and the attack of cyborgs just gets your goat... maybe it's time to pull up your boot straps and move on. This is the case with Sebastian. Part post nuclear fallout, part steam punk fun... Tesla reminds me of something my 8th grade science teacher would have written.

Filled with interesting science facts as well as several great characters, the adventures of Sebastian and his journey to the Steam Academy is appealing for young adults especially boys and girls who love science. The dialogue is believable including the humor and the angst. I enjoyed Malanie with her devil don't care attitude and how she related to Sebastian and the world laying in decay.

This book has an important message to all of us and I am very glad to have read it.

Monsters, Knights, and Evil Warlords, oh my!!!!

Imagine you've lost someone you loved dearly... in everything you do are memories from the man you called father... and you only solstice is a ride through the woods. Already grieving, something takes a hold of you and drops you in a world of monsters, knights, and ruthless leaders. Such is the case in The Carnelian Legacy..

I found this book to be quite good. Despite the age old love triangle, Marisa was a pretty cool character. Her expression of loss seemed quite real and you learned to care about her decisions. The monsters showed great creativity and I am happy they weren't your typical medieval lineup.

If you are a big romance reader, this is lacking much, but for those like me, it was just perfect. Enough to give you the flutters, but not so much that you feel like that's all the book has to offer. I'm definitively ready to read the next one and hope she gives some of the minor characters a little more page time.

Passion Can Turn to Magic

At first I wasn't sure of this book. I hadn't read the first book, but having two video game lovers and me being a book lover, the idea of that passion stemming a 'mancer level... well, it was just to intriguing to pass up. For those who love a good fantasy novel, this book is great. I enjoyed the hero being more a human than some battle hardened monster that could beat up anyone with just his pinky. I enjoyed Aliyah being a typical eight year old girl that had powers beyond what she could control. Her temper tantrums would make any parent go crazy.

The plot was fresh and even the minor characters weren't just two dimensional like so many books can do. Language is common so those with sensitive ears beware. A killer story with just enough wow to make you crave more.

Sequel to The Cabinet of Wonders

Starting a few months after the events in The Cabinet of Wonders, The Celestial Globe prepares you to look deep into the pasts of both Petra and her companions, Neel and Tom. When she and her father are attacked, Petra along with her tin spider, Astro, are rescued by the mysterious John Dee. He whisks her off to London to study her and her powers. Petra discovers she is a Chimera, a soul with more than one magical talent and begins a rigorous training program with Dee in the forefront and Kit teaching her how to use a sword. Meanwhile, Neel the thief and Tom, Petra's best friend take to the high seas to find her and the elusive Celestial Globe.

This book was definitely a good read as well as a pretty quick one. I would recommend it for readers who enjoy a good fantasy and who like mystery as well as some high sea fun. The romantic paths are very slight and are clean with a few kisses here and there. Gore is also minimal, but with sword play, you are going to get some blood. The characters are quick well described and the plot sucks you in. A page turner from the go....

12 Seconds Change Everything

12 seconds... that's all it takes to change the world...

Denny is lower class, at least according to the way his world classifies their citizens and low class do not get high class jobs. Unless, of course, you pass an exam you were not suppose to finish and proceed to do it again just as fast and as accurate. When strange people offer him a job that will stretch his imagination, Denny can't help but jump at the chance. Of course, that was before he was told he'd be a Rewinder.

I am not a huge time travel buff, though I love Dr. Who and Back to the Future, I don't tend to read those type books. This one, though, intrigued me. Denny is a great character, with a history many can relate to. From the wrong side of the tracks, he works hard and studies to be rewarded with a chance at greatest. Without giving too much away, I enjoy his inner struggles and was pleased that he was more human than some characters now tend to be.

Filled with a great deal of action and finding out your true self, the plot carries itself well and opens up the thought that a simple few seconds can change so much. We cross several centuries in this story and the author stays pretty true to each era.

Full of surprises and a well thought out time displacement, Rewinder is a great read for those wanting something different. Time travel buffs will definitely love it, though you don't have to be a fan to actually get something out of this story. A definite superb read...

Jellyfish Aliens And a Metal Dragon

Jellyfish aliens that send rain down from the sky, unique powers that give their bearers abilities to control the elements, metal creature that come to life, and a dangerous group trying to study and dissect them all... interested yet?!

Sing Down the Stars is an epic story filled with intrigue, a fresh storyline, and unbelievable fun characters. Pen is the fifth daughter of Magus, the metal man. She is also compatible of calling down fire from the sky, though it's not perfected yet. Forced to be a 'boy' to protect her identity, she and her four sisters perform in The Show, a circus designed to hide their powers in plain sight. Her companions are also touched, like the man who loves snakes, the girl with the beautiful voice, and the magicians. Magnus, her metalworking father created monsters to protect them... a dragon, a gryphon, and a host of others. It works well until disaster strikes.

This book held my attention through its entirety, and will definitely make it to my reread pile. The characters both human and metal were endearing and memorable, Xerxes being my favorite. The mystery keeps you guessing to the end and the writing style will appeal to both young adults and adults alike. I sure hope there is sequel.

Spinning Starlight

*Received from Disney Hyperion through Netgalley for an honest review. Thank you!

**You don't need to read Stitching Snow to understand Spinning Starlight, however, I urge you to definitely read both.

Liddi and her eight brothers are always in the spotlight. Each one is beyond smart and are part of the very famous Jantzen family. It's not a perfect life, but Liddi knows she's pretty lucky to have brothers that love her... that is until they all seem to disappear and men in black suits come to take her away. Now, she is forced into a situation where to save her brothers, she must forfeit the use of her own voice and rely on a boy she knows very little about to discover that nothing is ever as it appears.

First and foremost, I must applaud the author for using a tale that is not mainstream. I love the tale of The Wild Swans by Andersen and was so happy to see someone adapt it to a sci fi story. Liddi was perfect in her role as the savior. She was quick witted, high spirited, and slowly found her own as the heroine her bothers always thought she could be. Tiav made a wonderful romantic interest and I loved his devotion to Liddi even though she couldn't speak.

The atmosphere reminded me so much of the first novel and I am happy that Lewis always does a wonderful job of describing the surrounding as well as the different races. Details like that suck the reader deep inside the story and you forget you are sitting on the couch or wherever you might be reading.

I loved Stitching Snow and was enthralled with Spinning Starlight and its characters. My hope is there are more to the series and that Snow and Liddi will return in another novel. Definitely for those with a love of fairy tales and those who love a good romp through space.

The Eyes have It

Petra's father has magic to bring metal to life. He made her tin spider Astro and her best friend's dog along with several other critters that wander around their village. It is when her father builds a huge clock for the prince that things go bad. The prince orders his wizard to remove Petra's father's eyes and sends him back to the village blind. Without his eyes, how are they suppose to live and what does the prince need with them anyway? It's high time Petra found out.

This is a charming story filled with adventure and heart. Petra is a brave and often misunderstood girl with her little pal, Astro mumbling useful knowledge in her ear. Her partner in crime is a thief named Neel, who possesses the magic of ghost fingers, which allow entry into just about anywhere. Full of mystery and fun, this first story in the Kronos Chronicles is a gem for readers of all ages.

Ghosts, Brothers, and Dogs

This is an adorable book is about two brother wanting a big dog to pull their Wagon and finding out that even the 'wrong' dog can be pretty special. It is also a ghost story about a lonely man and an equally lonely sheepdog. Filled with great characters and a very good message, this is a superb way to start kids reading chapter books. Loved it.

Calling Once Upon A Time Fans

For those who love the series Once Upon a Time, we all know who Red is or Ruby of Storybrooke. Their version of Red Riding Hood with a magical cloak that protects dear sweet Red from the mammoth size wolves that attack the village people every Wolfstime. How, though, did she get the cloak and how did she meet Peter, the love of her life? And what other mysteries is Granny hiding? These questions and more are answered in Red's Untold Story by Wendy Toliver. For those who have not yet watched Once, I will keep to just my general opinion of the book and not go into much of the story save for what I said above. This novel takes place only in the Enchanted Forest and not in our world. Red is her typical self, growing up with her over protective grandma who has a knack for baking and trying hard to make friends in a village plagued by monsters every month.. Other characters included Peter, her best friend, and of course, Granny, Red also runs into trouble with three of the popular town girls, who are every bit as nasty as the stories of the wolf. Lovers of Once Upon A TIme will enjoy reading this book as well fans of the classic story, Red Riding Hood. I will warn the latter though, this is a slightly different story. If you are wanting to watch the TV show and are afraid this will spoil it, have no fear... there is very little spoilers, only clues to her origins. Writing style was very good and reminded me of the show with the exception of not going into our world. Regular characters from the series are only those will direct links to Red herself being Peter and Granny, which contains the story to her village and surrounding areas. For the most part I enjoyed this book. It remained true to the world I have come to love and gave us more insight on a character I wish they would have developed more. It is very clean with very little language and blood is kept to a minimum. I recommend this book to lovers of fairy tales, fantasy, and of course, Once Upon a Time.

Best Show in Wonderland?

If you love Alice in Wonderland, not for its cute Disney movie, but for the ultra mad world created by Lewis Carroll, this series is right up your alley. Part fantasy/part psychotic thriller, the Insanity Series brings the world of Wonderland to Earth in a bloody and dangerous way. The third in the series brings the same mad fun as the first two.

A rabbit with a bomb in its belly is loose in London, a man that resembles the Mad Hatter is doing parlor tricks, and Alice needs to solve the mystery while trying to remember who she really is.
Filled with characters so familiar yet so strange, Circus is a mad romp through the mind of one of the most beloved and misunderstood stories of all time. Can't wait for Hookah.

Listen up you Scallwags

Lewis thinks his great grandpa is pretty cool. So what if he talks to himself shouting at shadows as if they are real people? His parents think Grandpa's just senile and should be put in a home for his own good, but Lewis doesn't want to see the old man forced from his home he loves so much. It is then on Grandpa's 101st birthday, that he whispers an odd phrase for Lewis only to hear... Libertalia. The next day Great Grandpa is gone and with him any way of solving this odd name. From ghost pirates to a unique inheritance, Seven Dead Pirates is a perfect book for boys and girls alike.

Lewis and the cast of pirate ghosts fill these pages with adventure and fun, with fantastic high jinks and a thrilling 'rescue' mission from a Moo-see-um. Characters such as the mighty Captain Crawley and Adam the ship's boy, the mystery and well researched pirate lingo makes this book great for kids who might have trouble reading other books. Ms. Bailey works in her details with the plot making sure to keep the reader interested, instead of bogged down with lengthy passages.

I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me a great deal of the How To Train Your Dragon books and would be very good for parents with young boys. With its boyish humor (ghosts that are falling apart and sea worthy language), it would hold attention where some of the more serious novels do not. It's humorous, but also a well versed adventure where a young boy heads out to save a group of pirates and learns a little bit about himself in the process.

Batten Down the Hatches, Mate... and read this Book!!

A Whole New World... maybe?

What happens to a beloved story if you change one event? Does it unravel in a complete mess? Does it spiral out of control killing everyone and everything in its path? Or does it make its character rise to a new level therefore changing the plot so much that the new story is barely recognizable? In some books, that could be the case.. in A Whole New World though it really isn't.

Remember the cartoon... if you haven't had the pleasure, the first quarter of this book will be new to you. Aladdin is a poor street rat stealing her supper on the streets of Agragbah with his sidekick money, Abu. Jasmine is a princess forced to marry a prince to produce ah heir for the Sultan line. Jafar is a power hungry villain destine to find the lamp and take over the kingdom. Along the way, Rajah the tiger and Iago the parrot join the cast as well as the great and powerful Genie.

As I mentioned before, one event changes the outcome of the book meaning Aladdin doesn't get the lamp(Genie) but instead Jafar does. The street rat along with Abu and the carpet are forced to dig their way out and lead a rebellion to overthrow the new Sultan, or as we know him, Jafar. Jasmine, of course, comes to help him beginning the love story we know from the cartoon.

Now for my opinion... if you haven't seen the cartoon, it's a great book filled with high flying adventure and stunning scene description. If you have, well, it is very similar and almost feels like the writer took scenes from the movie and sliced them throughout the book adding bits and pieces to form the complicated albeit familiar story line. In reality, I expected more. Jafar to wish for something more unpredictable and for the story to actually change more than what was given. I did like Rajah more in this since he seemed to be more tiger than pussy cat. In truth, the animals behaved more like animals. Iago dumping his bowels down the back of Jafar's cloak was an added touch,

As I said, if you love the movie or have never seen it, the book is really well written and the characters are so fun that you will enjoy the humor, action, and intrigue. If the
movie was so-so to you, maybe rent it from the library or borrow it from a friend. I give it four stars for writing and 3 star for orginality.

Fairy Tale

A very enjoyable tale of twins, Fey folk, and magic... where being a twin is dangerous and where a pure heart is worth its weight in gold. A top notch story...I really liked this sweet tale. The characters both human and not were engaging and fun. It had its scary moments but still would recommend to tweens. I personally loved Wink and Fidget.

Hunters, Hounds, and Fey Folk oh my.....

Imagine that Fairy folk are not the pretty little pixies and gnomes that we see frolic among the meadows, all smiles bringing about peace and niceness. Imagine they, along with all their big bad friends want to eat you for the magic you produce. Imagine now that the only thing standing between you and them is a Hunter with large black hounds, much like what you would think of when you hear the term hell hound. This hunter is young, about fifteen and the seven hounds she commands look like rainbow dogs that breathe fire and kick... well you get it. That is the story that comes to life in Hunter by Mercedes Lackey.
Being a veteran to Lackey's stories, I was well pleased that she had not lost her tough. Joy, the Hunter who I was describing in the first paragraph is strong, generous, and full of confidence... at least as far as hunting concerned. She is not however ready for onslaught of media she receives when her and her hounds become this week's news. Her friends also play a wonderful role to support as well as expand the way you see Joy and other around her.

Many have complained about her wordiness, and to them, I have to say... You haven't read much of Mercedes' books. Her worlds deem a good beginning and in this world, it needed a thorough description. I actually liked the bit of teenager drama, much like most teens trying to make it through a world they are not quite sure of. I felt Lackey gave us a real girl in Joy, not one that is larger than life.

To my favorite part now... the hounds. Oh my... I loved the diversity of the guardian type creatures... from ones that fly to ones that teleport. They were so well described that I had no trouble picturing them in my head and I enjoyed the differences that each Hunter brought to their own hounds.

Overall, Hunter hit its mark for me. I cannot wait for her to write the second and am honored to have had a chance to review this book for Disney Hyperion. If you are a Lackey fan or new to her stuff, you should really pick it up. Fans of great fantasy and superb action will find this book quite satisfying.
